McCotter Bill Eases Parents’ Costs for Child’s Tutor

WASHINGTON D.C. – Congressman Thaddeus McCotter (MI – 11), Chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee, has authored a new bill to help parents pay for tutoring cost for their children. The Student Enhancement Act of 2008 (H.R. 5996) would provide parents a tax deduction of up to $10,000 for academic tutoring.

“American excellence ultimately rests upon our children’s intellectual fulfillment. Each year parent’s spend hundreds or thousands of dollars trying to provide a quality education for their children. By providing parents a tax deduction for tutoring cost we strengthen our commitment to education and ensure families are not torn between helping their children and paying bills,” said McCotter.

H.R. 5996, the Student Enhancement Act of 2008, would decrease the finical burden placed on parents who pay for tutors and tutorial supplies for their child. This legislation would give parents an income tax deduction not to exceed $10,000 for academic tutoring needed to supplement or enhance the education of a dependent student who is enrolled in an elementary or secondary school.

Currently, tutoring costs can vary for services and depends on company and subject matter. A traditional tutor can start at $10 for simple homework help or as much as $250 for an hour session for academic help with learning professionals.
