McCotter’s Statement Against Communist Chinese Oppression at Beijing Olympic Protest

WASHINGTON, D.C. — House Republican Policy Chairman, Representative Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI) delivered brief remarks this morning at a protest over the Beijing Olympics at the Communist Chinese embassy.  The coincide with the opening day ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics and was organized by Reporters Without Borders.  The protest also featured remarks from human rights organizations, Chinese dissidents and lawyers and human rights activists.

Representative McCotter’s remarks are as follows:

“Thank you for allowing me to be here with you today.  As we know, there are many American politicians who presently believe the best way we can show our support for the people of China and the people of the world is to attend the Olympics.  I fundamentally disagree with this proposition.  The best way we can show our support for the people of China and for the oppressed people of the world, is to today reaffirm our commitment that every human being is endowed by their creator with the right to liberty.  That no terrorist or tyrannical regime can vitiate.  But today while others gather far from this spot, let us tell the world that here today we stand for the freedom of our fellow human beings and that we realize the promotion and preservation of liberty throughout the world ensures it here in America for ourselves.  Thank you for all you are doing for the cause of human freedom.”
