WASHINGTON -- Congressman Thaddeus McCotter has co-sponsored legislation that will authorize the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to complete construction of a permanent barrier to prevent invasive Asian carp from traveling into the Great Lakes.
The bill, named the ''Great Lakes Asian Carp Barrier Act,'' authorizes the Army Corps to complete construction on a permanent barrier, while also improving and upgrading the original barrier. The legislation also would allow the Corps to study other options and technologies to prevent the spread of invasive species.
The Asian carp has in recent years made its way up the Mississippi River toward the Great Lakes. Biologists believe if the Asian carp were allowed into the lakes, the fish, which can weigh up to 100 pounds, would decimate native fish populations by eating their food supply.
