GOP Fights Democrats’ Wasteful Spending

March 31, 2006

Reprinted from Majority Matters Blog

It’s a curious thing.  Democrats desperately want to claim the mantra of fiscal responsibility but they simply can’t hide their glee at the thought of spending more taxpayer money.  And while their rhetoric may be misleading, their voting record isn’t.

This week a large majority of Budget Committee Democrats OPPOSED a common sense amendment to help reduce the deficit and demonstrate fiscal restraint.  Offered by Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI), the amendment would ensure that any additional recovered taxes owed to the U.S. Treasury go toward reducing the deficit, not to increase federal spending.

The Republican-backed amendment passed, but given an opportunity to put action behind their rhetoric and make deficit reduction a priority, Budget Committee Democrats did what Democrats do: They voted to squander more taxpayer money.

With the Republican budget plan expected to reach the House floor next week, the choice for the American people couldn’t be more clear:  Put together a fiscally-responsible budget and ensure that Congress spends America’s taxpayer dollars wisely or hand over control of spending to Capitol Hill Democrats who view the federal treasury as nothing more than a goldmine for new spending.
