LIVONIA – Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (MI-11) said today, turning over significant control of six of our largest ports to the United Arab Emigrates (UAE) without proper investigation and oversight could be disastrous.
McCotter, a member of the House International Relations Committee, is an original co-sponsor on three bills, which will be introduced next week by Reps. Peter King (R-NY), Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ) and Mark Foley (R-FL).
“America’s homeland security must remain in Americans’ hands,” McCotter said. McCotter also said he would “absolutely” support overriding a Presidential veto of any of the above bills.
Rep. King’s legislation, if passed, will temporarily halt the Dubai Ports World deal, initiate a thorough 45-day investigation of the firm, and allow Congress to review the findings.
Rep. Foley’s legislation will give both the House and Senate Intelligence and House and Senate Homeland Security committees the authority to review and approve or reject all applications made through the Committee on Foreign Investments in the United States (CFIUS).
Rep. LoBiondo’s legislation would compel Dubai Ports World, a company owned by the government of the United Arab Emirates, to hire only facility security officers who are U.S. citizens
