Washington, DC – Statement from Representative Thaddeus McCotter (R-Livonia) regarding Iraq’s first free election, January 30, 2005:
“On Jan. 30, millions of Iraqi's cast their vote for and their lot with freedom.
“Yet while we congratulate Iraq's citizens for taking a courageous step in their ascent upon the stage of civilized nations, we must stay ever aware of the tortuous times which lurk before this beleaguered people. For this election is not an end unto itself; it is the begining of a journey - a journey all free and peaceful nations have taken in their times of trial and triumph along the road to liberty.
“Let us, then, view this event in its proper, promising light by remembering the warning Winston Churchill once spoke when civilization was standing its shakiest ground at the height of the barbarous fascist peril:
"’It is not the end. It is not the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.’"
