Bush Pushes McCotter Plan to Create Assistant Secretary of Manufacturing Position

Washington  - Representative Thaddeus G. McCotter (R-Livonia) today welcomed the President’s Labor Day announcement, stating the administration will establish an Assistant Secretary of Manufacturing in Washington.  Rep. McCotter has been working to make the Department of Commerce more responsive to the needs of the nation’s manufacturers and is the author of legislation to establish an Undersecretary of Manufacturing within the Department of Commerce.

“The President’s announcement gives hope to Michigan’s manufacturers and their over one million employees,” said McCotter.  “Finally, Washington is getting the message America’s manufacturing base must be preserved and promoted.”

Rep. McCotter’s bill, H.R. 2172, would establish within the executive branch a position responsible for preserving and protecting American manufacturing’s workers and employers.  The bill has been gaining momentum and currently has more than 20 cosponsors.  In addition, the July 23 passage of the House Departments of Commerce, Justice, State, the Judiciary and Related Agencies Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2004 includes language recommending the establishment of a similar position.
